Holistic Guidance Through Early Motherhood

In a world that often overlooks the needs of mothers, I wanted to create a resource that honours the transformative process of matrescence and provides you with tools for self-discovery and growth. When I became a mother, I longed for a companion like this; a guide to help me navigate the complexities of my new identity–physiologically and psychologically–and the profound changes in my life. This journal is the culmination of that longing, informed by my own experiences, reflections and research. I believe in the power of self-actualisation and self-appreciation, and I invite you to embark on this holistic journey of self-discovery alongside me. Let's explore the depths of our inner landscapes, embracing both the joys and the challenges of motherhood with honesty and grace. It's never too late to explore, process, and integrate your unique matrescence journey, finding healing and embracing the profound bliss that comes with it.

Matrescence

"The process of becoming a mother, coined by Dana Raphael, Ph.D. (1973), is a developmental passage where a woman transitions through pre-conception, pregnancy and birth, surrogacy or adoption, to the postnatal period and beyond. The exact length of matrescence is individual, recurs with each child, and may arguably last a lifetime! The scope of the changes encompass multiple domains --bio-psycho-social-political-spiritual-- and can be likened to the developmental push of adolescence." - Aurélie Athan, Ph.D.

Mamas may find or re-ignite a supportive modality for ongoing practice across their years of working with the Journal. Other influences and inclusions I have adapted span: intentional living, zen practices, ritual, mindfulness, reflection and psychological healing. When we as mothers practice truly knowing and trusting ourselves, and when we as women fully embody who we are with love and compassion, we can live life with liberation and joy. From nurturing this ongoing growth within us, our journey’s of motherhood are enhanced and supported by inner wisdom.

The design of the Journal is purposefully crafted to foster a nurturing atmosphere for reflection, infused with symbolism and authenticity. Its down-to-earth, vibrant layout mirrors the cycle of seasons, embodying themes of change, growth, introspection, and renewal inspired by the diverse earthly seasons and their personal significance. The concluding pages offer spare writing space, adorned with tropical depictions from my hometown, serving as a nod to the roots of acknowledgment and a glimpse into the author’s background. Every aspect, from the colours to the Australian flora artwork, is meticulously curated for those with an appreciation for detail. Floral motifs grace the cover, accompanied by a circular emblem symbolising unity and the timeless continuum of maternal lineage—an unbroken journey without a distinct beginning or end.

I have endeavoured to curate an inclusive, accessible workbook that gently guides our community of mamas to new parts of ourselves arising during matrescence. Drawing upon the power of engaging our creativity and subconscious mind, I have curated: writing, drawing, mapping and meditative exercises for a deep, diverse experience.
